In the 21st century, there seems to be a gargantuan increase in cases of common colds, fevers, skin conditions, and allergic reactions. Especially with so much dust around, the reactions to allergies have become much worse as compared to what it might have been several years ago.

Allergic reactions like sneezing, runny nose, itchiness, and even wheezing can cause a lot of issues in daily life, and to mitigate or control these challenges, pharmacists have manufactured combination therapies like the Montelukast Sodium and Levocetirizine hydrochloride tablets to achieve targeted success.

This article will cover a comprehensive guide on the composition, the benefits, uses, and much more.

Montelukast Sodium and Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets

Montelukast Sodium and Levocetirizine Hydrochloride tablets are widely used as a combination medication tablet that aims to treat allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis (nasal allergies), asthma, and chronic hives (urticaria). This is a dual-action combination therapy that leverages the medical effects of the montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist, and levocetirizine, a second-generation antihistamine.  The combination medication helps relieve symptoms caused by allergens and airway inflammation quite effectively.

Leukotriene Receptor Antagonist (LTRA) Vs Antihistamines

    Leukotriene Receptor Antagonist (LTRA)

Leukotriene receptor antagonists, or LTRAS, are a particular type of medication that block the action of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory molecules that are present and involved in asthma and allergic reactions.

LTRAs help reduce this inflammation that appears in the airways and induce symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Montelukast and zafirlukast are some of the popular LTRAs.

    Antihistamines

Antihistamines are a particular class of medication drugs that work to block the effects of histamine, a chemical that the body releases during allergic reactions. Antihistamines like levocetirizine and loratadine help relieve allergic symptoms like sneezing, an itchy, runny nose, and more.

Montelukast Sodium and Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablet: Mechanism

    Montelukast Sodium

Montelukast Sodium belongs to the LTRAs class, and the Leukotrienes are inflammatory mediators that are released by the body in response to allergens like pollen, dust, and pet hair or dander. The result of these allergens normally causes airway inflammation, wheezing, nasal congestion, and asthma-like symptoms. Montelukast Sodium works by binding the CysLT1 receptor and thus helps manage the allergic reaction, and even prevents asthma.

    Levocetirizine Hydrochloride

the Levocetirizine Hydrochloride belongs to the antihistamine class ‘Cetirizine’ but this form is a rather potent but minimally sedative tablet. As compared to the first-generation antihistamines, this type is not as sedating despite being highly effective and potent. Levocetirizine provides rapid relief from acute allergy symptoms, thus making it very effective and especially complementary to Montelukast’s anti-inflammatory action.

Montelukast Sodium and Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Combination

With the effects of montelukast and the potency of Levocetirizine, one gets a very high-quality medicine that targets two distinct pathways of the allergic reactions and effects. With the former, you get to address the leukotriene-mediated inflammation, and with the latter, you get to tackle your allergy-driven symptoms. This dual mechanism of action offers instant symptom relief, which overall leads to an enhanced quality of life. In fact, clinical studies have even shown that this combination tablet is more effective together than as a drug alone.

Montelukast Sodium and Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets Uses

Montelukast Sodium and Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets highly potent combination that is used for variety of reasons like-

    • Allergic Rhinitis Management: Irrespective of whether the allergic rhinitis is seasonal or year-round, it is annoying. Managing symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion affects quality of life, and this is where the combination drug helps.
    • Managing Asthma and such symptoms: This combination of Montelukast sodium and levocetirizine hydrochloride tablets helps reduce any inflammation in the airways, thus preventing or reducing asthmatic symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath. This also reduces the chances of an  acute asthma attack.
    • Management of Chronic Urticaria: Also known as Hives, this combination drug helps in alleviating itchiness, redness, and swelling, which may be due to chronic hives.
    • Managing or reducing the effects of Bronchoconstriction: It may happen that due to hardcore exercises or physical exertion, one might start suffering from shortness of breath. Montelukast helps reduce these effects.
    • Reducing effects of respiratory allergies and bronchitis: This drug provide relief from symptoms that are associated with upper respiratory tract infections and bronchitis symptoms that are linked and related to allergies.

    Dosage and Administration

    • The dosage for adults and even adolescents is normally universal to one tablet a day.
    • Montelukast 10 mg, and Levocetirizine 5 mg is a enough combination that must be taken once in a day, preferably at night. so that it can align with the body’s rhythm and manage any symptoms overnight.
    • For children who are below 14 years old, a lower dose is recommended.

    How to Take the Tablets:

    • It is advised to take the tablet after a meal to minimize any stomach issues.
    • Swallow the tablet whole with water – do not chew or crush as this might taste overly bitter.
    • In case you are taking this medicine for bronchoconstriction, it is recommended to take the tablet at least two hours before physical activity.
    • It is always advised to follow the doctor’s prescribed dosage and for the written duration, as stopping it abruptly or prolonging the medication might cause complications.

Why is Montelukast taken at night?

Montelukast is always advised to take medicines that deal with allergies or asthma-related symptoms at night, as they cause a lot of drowsiness. Primarily, since they cause drowsiness, it is recommended to have Montelukast at night as it would align with the body’s rhythm and manage anymore symptoms through the night with ease.

Can Levocetirizine be used for a cough?

Given the fact that Levocetirizine is a medication with antihistamine properties, it is also used to treat symptoms associated with bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cough, sneezing, and runny nose.

    • It is never recommended to drink alcohol during this medication phase, before or after ,as the alcohol can exacerbate drowsiness caused by the tablet
    • It is not recommended to drive or operate heavy machinery after taking this medicine as the combination tablet normally brings drowsiness, and both driving and machinery work require mental concentration, which might be impacted here.
    • Doctors recommend stopping any allergy testing before taking this medicine, as this might reduce or worsen the effects of the tablet.
    • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding must consult their doctor before taking this medicine

Although this is quite safe in a general sense, it is still very important to follow the precautions to ensure safety.

With the proper usage, this combination tablet can be of a lot of help where allergic reactions are concerned, thus restoring the overall quality of life.
